National statistics show that each year in the UK around 700,000 women will become pregnant and every one of these will be offered some form of testing.
Out of these women, approximately:-
250,000 will miscarry
35,000 will be told that there is a risk their unborn baby may have a serious abnormality
32,000 will be admitted into hospital with an Ectopic pregnancy
6,500 will have their babies stillborn, or die within the first month of life
“In 2002 my husband and I were told our 20 week-old daughter Lucy had a life threatening abnormality and would not have survived birth.
In 2003 we were faced with the agonising decision to end the pregnancy and felt very isolated with no local support available.
Two years on I founded Forget Me Not. I decided the way forward was to become a registered charity. Although this would inevitably create a great deal of administration and paperwork I felt it was necessary. Some people may set up a group following a life changing event and as time goes by when the devastation is less intense some groups may fold. I wanted to demonstrate my commitment to developing the organisation and our charity registration was complete in 2006.
Since that date we have helped numerous people by offering support groups, one to one befriending appointments, annual remembrance events, handmade baby gowns, pencil illustrations and 3D clay hand and foot prints. We know from the feedback we have received, what a difference these services have made to people who have contacted Forget Me Not.
We are very proud to have instigated the baby memorial garden at Glynn Valley Crematorium and to be involved in the planning of it.
Our Charity Rose naming was also a very proud moment and would not have been possible without a kind donation from Warrens Bakery.
One in four people are affected by pregnancy loss, unyet it is a form of bereavement often ‘brushed under the carpet’ and ignored. Forget Me Not hopes to raise awareness and help change attitudes for the future.
For whatever reason you have lost your baby, the end result is the same, we have all lost something we desperately wanted and loved.
Not a day goes by when I do not think about Lucy, she is my inspiration and motivation, without her there would be no Forget Me Not.
Emotional support and clear information can make a real difference in helping to cope.
May you find comfort, help and friendship from Forget Me Not”.
